About Video QR Codes

A video QR code opens a clip on whatever phone scans it. There are two ways to build one, and choosing wrong is the most common mistake on this page.

Upload the file and EZQR hosts it. Good for a demo reel at a trade-show booth, a tutorial on packaging, an install walkthrough on a product insert. The limit is 25 MB, which in practice means a 30-to-90 second clip at 1080p.

Link an existing URL and the QR points at YouTube, Vimeo or Loom. Better for anything longer, anything you already publish, and anything you want view analytics on from the platform itself.

The deciding question is not file size. It is whether you want the viewer to land on a platform page with related videos, subscribe buttons and autoplay recommendations, or on a bare hosted file that plays and stops.

Walkthrough

How to Create a Video QR Code

  1. Choose upload or link

Upload for short self-hosted clips under 25 MB. Link for anything already on YouTube, Vimeo or Loom, and for anything longer than about 90 seconds at 1080p.

  2. Add the file or URL

Accepted upload formats are MP4, WebM and QuickTime MOV. For links, paste the normal share URL — the platform handles mobile playback.

  3. Compress before uploading if you are near the limit

H.264 at 720p and a 2–4 Mbps bitrate fits roughly 90 seconds into 25 MB and plays cleanly on any phone. Exporting straight from a phone camera at 4K will blow the limit in about 12 seconds.

  4. Style and test the code

Pick colours and add a logo if you want. Then scan the printed proof on both an iPhone and an Android before the print run, because video autoplay behaviour differs between them.

  5. Download PNG or SVG

PNG for screens and digital. SVG for print at any size — posters, packaging, booth graphics and trade-show banners.

Video QR Code FAQ

Common questions about generating, printing, and deploying these codes.

What video formats and size can I upload?

MP4, WebM and QuickTime MOV, up to 25 MB. That is the practical constraint most people hit first. As a rule of thumb, H.264 at 720p and 2–4 Mbps fits roughly 90 seconds; 1080p fits around 30–45 seconds; footage straight off a modern phone at 4K will exceed the limit in about 12 seconds. Compress before uploading rather than trimming content you need — dropping 4K to 720p usually saves more than cutting the clip in half.

Should I upload the file or link to YouTube?

Link if the video already exists on a platform, runs longer than about 90 seconds, or if you want retention analytics. Upload if you want a clean playback page with no related videos, no subscribe prompt and no recommendations pulling the viewer away — which matters on packaging and at trade shows, where the competitor's ad appearing in the sidebar is a genuine risk.

Does the viewer need an app?

No. The scan opens in the phone's default browser and plays there. Uploaded files play in the native HTML5 video player on both iOS and Android. Platform links open in the browser too, though YouTube and Vimeo will offer to hand off to their app if it is installed. Nothing requires an install to watch.

Will the video autoplay when someone scans?

Not with sound, and you should not design around it. Both iOS and Android block autoplay-with-audio on a page the user has just arrived at, which is a deliberate browser policy rather than a limitation of the QR code. Muted autoplay sometimes works. Assume the viewer taps play, and make the first frame worth tapping.

Can I change the video after printing the code?

Only with a dynamic QR code. A static code encodes the destination in the pattern itself, so changing the video means reprinting. Dynamic codes encode a redirect you repoint from the dashboard, which matters here more than on most content types because video gets re-edited and re-uploaded constantly.
